Garmin offers communications and automatic identification systems (AIS) designed to improve the comfort and safety of mariners worldwide. They all include Digital Selective Calling (DSC), a global protocol that uses channel 70 to send and receive digital messages. VHF radios with DSC can send and receive digital distress messages, private calls and regular telephone calls, and you can make VHF calls using stored MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) numbers. DSC significantly increases the chances of a quick rescue operation.
