Gas is often used in stoves and cooking appliances, but they are only explosive if the gas is combined with the right amount of oxygen. Gas is also heavier than air and if your boat has a gas leak, the boat will act like a giant gas container that is filled from below.
It doesn't take much to ignite the gas. A small spark can be created by lighting a lamp or by simply starting the engine, and it can be enough to trigger an explosion. Another serious problem can arise when you sleep and inhale the gas, it can end fatally. The NASA gas detector is a simple instrument, consisting of a sensor unit that is placed low in the boat, as well as an alarm and control unit that is placed centrally. The sensor detects when the mixture of oxygen and gas approaches the lowest explosion point and sends a signal to the alarm unit, which gives an alarm.
